- Overview
- ========
-
- SEEK is a utility for looking up Bible references.
-
- If you can't quite remember that verse that says something about how much
- God loved the world, then enter up to three words that you think are in the
- verse, "God", "loved" and "world" and SEEK will quickly find:-
-
- John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son,
- that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting
- life.
-
- SEEK supports interactive help.
-
- RISC OS 2
- =========
-
- It is doubtful as to whether SEEK will operate under RISC OS 2. All my
- friends have now upgraded to RISC OS 3, so it's not easy for me to check.
-
- Installation
- ============
-
- SEEK is provided as an archived file on a 1.6Mb floppy disk. It is possible
- to operate SEEK from the archive on the floppy disk, using !ArcFS. When
- operating in this way, the speed of SEEK will be limited by the speed at
- which the data can be read from the floppy disk.
-
- To install SEEK on a hard disk, simply open the archive and drag the !SEEK
- application directory onto your hard disk.
-
- How to use it
- =============
-
- Double-click on the !SEEK icon. After a few seconds SEEK will appear on the
- icon bar.
-
- Click on the icon bar. The SEEK Control window will appear.
-
- Enter the words you want into the three writable icons, then click on the
- Seek button to start the search. SEEK will then find all the verses which
- contain all the specified words.
-
- SEEK will indicate its progress in a separate progress window.
-
- When SEEK has completed its search, it will open a display window containing
- the verses it has found.
-
- The verses that have been found can be saved to a file, or to another
- application, by using the SAVE option from the menu. Drag the output file
- from the save box to a filer window, or into an EDIT document, or onto the
- EDIT iconbar icon.
-
- Hints
- =====
-
- In some cases, it might be reasonable to search for a single word, if the
- word doesn't occur too many times in the Bible. Enter the word into one of
- the three writable icons, and leave the others blank.
-
- If this produces too much output, then you should refine your search
- criteria by adding a second or third word in the other writeble icons. SEEK
- will display only those verses which contain all of the specified words.
-
- Alternatively, you can reduce the amount of output by restricting the search
- to only part of the Bible by using the SELECTION option from the menu.
-
- In general, it is not a good idea to include very common words, like "the",
- in your search criteria.
-
- Words
- =====
-
- SEEK only searches for complete words. If searching for "righteous" it will
- completely ignore any occurrences of "unrighteous", "righteousness",
- "righteously" etc.
-
- If you spell a word incorrectly, or enter a word that does not occur
- anywhere in the Bible, then SEEK will immediately recognise that the word is
- not in its dictionary, and not bother to perform the search.
-
- SEEK ignores the difference between upper and lower case.
-
- Be aware that the spelling of some words has changed since the King James
- Version of the Bible was produced. SEEK will only recognise the original KJV
- spelling.
-
- Using a wildcard in the WORDCOUNT option may help you check your spelling.
-
- Menu Options
- ============
-
- Clicking with the middle mouse button over any SEEK window will bring up the
- menu. The menu options are:-
-
- INFO Tells you a little bit about SEEK
-
- SAVE Opens the save box.
- Drag the file to a filer window, or to a text editor.
-
- The contents of the output buffer remain unchanged until you
- perform another search, so it is possible to save several copies
- of the same output without re-seeking. So, if you don't like the
- format, you can change the format options and re-save without
- re-seeking.
-
- SELECTION Opens the selection window.
-
- If you want to limit your search to part of the Bible, either for
- speed, or because there are too many occurrences of your target
- words, then use this window to switch off the parts that you wish
- to exclude from the search.
-
- By default the whole Bible is searched.
-
- WORDCOUNT Opens the word count window.
-
- If you want to know how many times a particular word occurs in the
- Bible, then type it into the WORD COUNT window and press RETURN.
- The number of occurrences will then be displayed.
-
- The LAST character may be the wildcard asterisk "*", e.g. "right*"
- will match all words like "righteous", "righteousness" etc. All
- the words which match the pattern are detailed in the output
- window, and the total number of occurrences for all matching words
- appears in the wordcount window. If there are more than 1000
- matching words, only the first 1000 will be displayed.
-
- NOTE: The WORD COUNT operation is not affected by the current
- settings in the SELECTION window. It always gives the number of
- words in the entire Bible.
-
- NOTE: If a word occurs twice in one verse, then the number of
- word occurrences shown in the word count window will differ from
- the number of verses found by a SEEK operation searching for the
- word.
-
- EXPORT Opens the export window.
-
- The export window allows you to save passages of text into a text
- file or into another application.
-
- There are three pieces of info to specify: BOOK, FROM and TO.
-
- BOOK: Click SELECT on the menu icon [⇨]. Select a book from the
- menu which will then appear.
-
- FROM: Enter the chapter:verse numbers where the chunk starts.
-
- TO: Enter the chapter:verse numbers where the chunk ends.
-
- To specify an entire book, enter "1:1" in the FROM icon, and
- "999:999" in the TO icon.
-
- Once these are filled in, click SELECT on the SAVE icon. At this
- point the values you typed into the icons will be validated, and
- an error produced if the from and to values are not correctly
- formatted. If the values are valid, then a save box is opened.
- Drag the save box to a directory or a text editor application.
-
- FORMAT opens the format control window. You can use this to modify the
- format of the saved and exported text.
-
- The format control window has four sections:-
-
- SAVE TEXT controls the layout of the text of a saved file.
-
- EXPORT TEXT controls the layout of the text of an exported
- file.
-
- EXPORT REF controls the references used in an exported file.
-
- SPECIAL FX can be used to insert special control strings.
-
- Saved text always has a full reference.
-
- • SINGLE SPACED - each verse starts on a new line
- • DOUBLE SPACED - a blank line after each verse
- • NO TEXT - only the reference will be saved, not the
- text
- • CONTINUOUS - no new lines
-
-
- • FULL REFERENCE - like "1 Chron 5:2 "
- • CHAPTER:VERSE - like "5:2 "
- • VERSE - like "2 "
- • NO REFERENCE - reference numbers are omitted
-
- The SPECIAL FX are
-
- • IMPRESSION SUPER - when loaded into Impression, the
- references will have the "superscript" effect.
- • IMPRESSION REF - Open an Impression document and create a
- style called "Reference", THEN when the references are loaded
- into the document they will be in the "Reference" style. ((If
- you load the text in first, then create the style, Impression
- can get very confused))
- • ANGLES - The references appear between sets of angle
- brackets.
-
- Expert users are invited to configure their own special
- effects by editing the CONFIG file, details are at the end of
- the "Technical" document.
-
- QUIT terminates the program
-
- Progress Messages
- =================
-
- "WAITING: No target words selected" You have attempted to perform a SEEK
- without entering anything to search for.
-
- "SEEK COMPLETED: Word 'xxxxxxxxxx' never occurs" One of the words that you
- are trying to search for is not in SEEK's dictionary. SEEK's dictionary
- contains all the words that occur in the Bible. You may have spelled the
- word incorrectly (or perhaps just differently from the KJV spelling).
-
- "SEEKING 'xxxxxxxx'" This is displayed when a search has just started. The
- word indicated is being used as the primary search criterion. The primary
- search criterion is the least commonly occurring word entered. E.g. if you
- search for "throne", "rainbow", "sardine" then SEEK will say "SEEKING
- 'sardine'" because the Bible refers to "sardine" fewer times than "throne"
- or "rainbow".
-
- "SEEKING: Found XXX 99:99: Found XXXX occurrences so far" Indicates the
- current progress of the search.
-
- "COMPLETED: Found XXXX occurrences" The search has completed. The number of
- verses that match the criteria is displayed. Note: for a one-word search
- this may not be the same as the number of occurrences of the word itself,
- since the word may occur more than once is some verses.
-
- "STOPPED: Output buffer is full" The output buffer has used up the 1000
- lines of text, which is its maximum capacity. (I could make it bigger, but
- each additional 12 lines of text requires an additional 1k of WimpSlot
- memory, and I wanted SEEK to work on a 1Mb machine). The first 1000 lines of
- output are available for viewing and saving.
-
- Apostrophes
- ===========
-
- To search for a word that contains an apostrophe, enter the whole word
- including the apostrophe. E.g. "Peter's". N.B. searching for "Peter" will,
- unfortunately, not find "Peter's". SEEK considers these to be two completely
- different words.
-
- The program has a little bit of difficulty working with words which have a
- TRAILING apostrophe ("The Jews' feast of Tabernacles", "Moses' disciples").
- It is not possible to distinguish a trailing apostrophe from a single-quote.
- (He said, "They told me 'We are Jews'"). The program gets round this by
- ignoring trailing apostrophes when searching. The words "Jews'" and "Jews"
- are considered to be the same word.
-
- Hyphenated words
- ================
-
- SEEK considers hyphenated words to be two separate words. E.g. to find the
- word "God-ward" you should search for the two separate words "God" and
- "ward".
